Why I ♥ Goodwill

Two days a week I get and hour and a half for lunch. I work within 5 miles of 2 Goodwill stores. I know, totally dangerous! This week I hit the jackpot on treasures.

This white 16in vase was $4.99
I found a similar vase on-line at Pottery Barn* for $99
Now it would have been great "as is"...but I thought it was a little blah...
I used spray paint that I already had and in 5 minutes I had a new vase.
I love how the spray paint gave it a marbled look. It's a great pop of color on our mantel. All it needs now is something to go in it!

This tray was $5.99

Pottery Barn* sells this same sized tray for $89.00

My "new" one is in great condition and I really like the metal handles. I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with it yet. I might paint it or tile the bottom. For now it works well on top of my bedroom dresser.

This next one is my FAVORITE! When I first saw it in the store there was a lady eyeballing it...checking it out...she pondered it and turned around-total rookie mistake. SO I GRABBED THE TAG!!! I WIN!!! (The best advice I can give you when shopping at Goodwill is to take the tag if you are interested. You can always put it back if you change your mind, but they frown upon wrestling other customers for items.)

This is a metal king size headboard. It was only $23!!!! The best part is that I didn't have to do one thing to it! I spent $2.07 on 4 bolts with washers and nuts and installed it in 10 minutes.

Special thanks to my neighbor Brad. Without his truck and his willingness to drive to Goodwill on his day off I wouldn't be the owner of this amazing find! Thanks Brad! You rock!
Crate and Barrel* sells this king headboard for $399 (I like mine much better).
Here is my bed before:
This is what it looks like now:
I absolutely love it!!!
I can hardly wait for my next lunch break!!!

**...I have nothing against Pottery Barn or Crate and Barrel. In fact I love both stores and shop there often. I am merely showing how you can have Pottery Barn/Crate and Barrel taste on a Goodwill budget AND find unique items for your home.

Happy hunting!

Homemade Ravioli

I'm note sure where the original recipe came from...I've made these so many times that I keep it all in my head. When made ahead and frozen the ravioli can be ready in 5 minutes. I like to make a large batch over the weekend and then freeze them. Just as quick as the drive through, but much healthier!

You will need:
Wonton Wrappers
(They are usually in the produce area of the grocery store. Typically in the organic section)

Your filling
Some many different choices for fillings...cheese, meat, sweet potato. I used what I had on hand:
  • Low fat ricotta (15oz)
  • Mozzarella and Parmesan cheese (a few handfuls of each)
  • Chopped fresh spinach (about a handful)
  • Freshly ground nutmeg
  • 1 beaten egg (for binding it all together)

Directions:
Line baking sheet with wax paper, freezer paper or parchment paper

Place wontons on baking sheet without touching each other
Take about 1 tablespoon of your filling and put it in the center of each wonton wrapper.
Dip your finger in water and wet the perimeter of each wonton wrapper (the water is what will allow the two wrappers to stick to each other). Place another wrapper on top and gently press the edges together. Be careful to keep the filling in the middle, you don't want it coming out when you boil the pasta.

**If you want to freeze your pasta put the whole sheet in the freezer for about an hour. Then transfer frozen pasta to a freezer bag**

Continue making your ravioli until all wrappers have been used. I was able to get 24 ravioli from my package of wonton wrappers.

To cook the ravioli boil them in water for 2-3 minutes (approximately 5 minutes if frozen). Be careful not to crowded them in the water or they can stick to each other.

In a separate pan melt butter and infuse with your favorite Italian seasonings. I used a mixture of basil, oregano and parsley. Pour butter sauce over ravioli and enjoy!

Today I Stop Being Fun...

For the past 100 days I have been in hibernation...today I am coming out and I stop being fun...or at least that's what I have been told (in a loving way of course!).

Today starts my training. Today I start running.

I've been running for the past 16 years and in the last 2 I've become quite serious, running 3 half-marathons a year with a sprinkling of 5K and 10K races in there too. This year I've added an extra half, convinced a bunch of my friends to do a 3 mile mud run-The Mudathlon-and at some point a full marathon...location and time TBD.

My first ever race was a 5K in San Diego. It was for a local Mexican restaurant. To this day it is still my favorite. There was a Mariachi band at the top of the first hill and when you crossed the finish line you got a sombrero (which I still have). They also had beer and taquitos for all the runners. Seriously how can it get any better than that?!?!?!

Since then I've gotten much faster and willing to run further, but I still think I do it for the beer at the end (...and the medals...I really like my medals too...)!

Sometimes you get to look like a baked-potato wrapped in foil...

If you're lucky you can brainwash your friends into thinking running is fun too...

So why does training stop my fun-ness? It's because it has to become a priority. I sometimes have to miss crafty nights and GNO to put in miles on the treadmill or I can't stay out late because I have an early run the next morning. I stop talking about bias tape and pattens and switch gears to split times, pacing and become a connoisseur of energy gels and goo. Sometimes it means less family dinners as the hubby and I try to juggle our running schedules so we each get in the miles we need. It's a hard adjustment. I like my carefree 100 days of hibernation, but last year I achieved 3 personal goals I set for myself and it made all the little scarifies worth it!

This is Nate and I crossing the finish line last year at the Indy Mini Marathon. My goal was to finish in under two hours...I did it in 1:58:03 and there is no way I could have done it with out Nate's help. He kept our time and my sanity in check the whole way. He knew when to encourage and when to back-off (sometimes I get cranky when I can't run and breathe). He was with me the whole way.

I started running to be healthy. Looking at these pictures it's easy to see why I still do it....in EVERY picture, whether it was taken before or after the race, I have a HUGE smile on my face!

 LET RACING SEASON BEGIN!

Here are a few of my favorite motivational running quotes:

"If you run, you are a runner. It doesn't matter how fast or how far. It doesn't matter if today is your first day or if you've been running for twenty years. There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get. You just run."
--John Bingham

"It's very hard in the beginning to understand that the whole idea is not to beat the other runners. Eventually you learn that the competition is against the little voice inside you that wants you to quit."
--Dr George Sheehan

“Every morning in Africa, an antelope wakes up. It knows it must outrun the fastest lion, or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest antelope, or it will starve. It doesn’t matter whether you’re the lion or an antelope – when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.” – African Proverb

The Bag

My bag is getting full.

It contains every art project and drawing my girls have brought home from school.

I think I need a bigger bag...or an intervention...

Spoutin' Off

Attention all foodies!!! This is a "must have" for your kitchen!
A slip-on pour spout!

They can be found at The Kitchen Outlet  or Kitchen Krafts and are only around $5 each. They work on mixing bowls, jars and even your pots & pans. No more spilling things and making huge messes in the kitchen. As you can see they come in a few colors and are dishwasher-safe.

What a great idea!

Sniff...sniff..Can someone please get me a tissue?!?!?

Thursdays are our worse worst (FYI grammer and spelling were my worst subjects in school, but I think I got that one right...) night of the week...everyone gets home late and we all have to be up very early the next day. Now that Lo is getting older she has homework and other projects she needs to work on. Last night wasn't any different. We had homework, thank you notes and Lo also needed to address her Valentine's Day cards for her friends at school.

I snapped these pictures while she was diligently finishing all her tasks so she could watch TV:

Something about her just made me so sentimental. She's sitting there working so hard on her homework...eating her snack all grown-up like.

It won't be long before she's asking me for the keys to my car...

Preferring to spend time with her friends over snuggling with me on the couch...

Calling/thinking about/giggling over boys...

Borrowing (without asking of course) my clothes/shoes/jewelry...

Rolling her eyes, telling me I don't understand...

Applying to colleges far, far away...

Getting married and moving far, far away...

Okay...I can't think about that anymore...my heart isn't ready to think about that right now...

Deep breath in...deep breath out....find your happy place...ahhh...there it is...

And then there is my NoJo. She's growing up too fast too. Miss independent who doesn't want help with ANYTHING...she had her own "homework" last night. She had to decorate her Valentine's Day box. She had so much fun!

WHERE HAVE MY BABIES GONE?!?!?! (Please excuse me while I go cry in my pillow!)
