Vintage Flower Farm

One of my latest obsessions is satin flower pins and hair clips. I pretty much wear them everyday and my favorites are from Vintage Flower Farm. Each handmade piece is unique and has a vintage brooch, pin or earring at the center. They are gorgeous!

Hands down this one is my favorite:

I just can't get over the vintage cameo in the center!

And this one:

So beautiful!

She also makes headbands, crocheted hats and even flowered dog collars.

But it's the newest item in her shop that has my crafty heart going pitter-patter...

Custom Vintage Flower Cake Toppers!

They are made to coordinate with the colors of your wedding and she will even incorporate special items into the piece. Wouldn't it be amazing to have your great-grandmother's vintage brooch in the center or have lace from your mother's wedding dress as part of the flower. An instant family heirloom that not only can be passed down but can be worn as a pin or hair clip after your wedding.

And really...it doesn't have to be on a wedding cake. Any crafty girl would love a birthday cake with one of these flowers on top! (hint...hint...)

Crafty Goals Update #2

We are about half-way through January...Here are the stats...

*0/10 Etsy items made-I have however cut out about 15 things. All they need is to be put together...in my spare time...

*Neither serger nor embroidery machine have seen the light of day...

What has she been doing???

Well...in between working, taking care of a sick little girl, cooking, shuffling kids to various activities, laundry and all the other tasks us busy mamas take care of...I FINALLY HAD SOME TIME TO BE CRAFTY!!!

One of the teachers in my daughter's school is having a baby next month so the kids gave her a baby shower. I made her a taggie blanket and this soft and cuddly Butterbean Doll by Bit of Whimsy Dolls. Her body is make out of the the same Minky fabric as the back of the blanket.

I heart her!

I also finished a Embroider hoop set for a friend at work. I made a total of 6, they spell out her last name. I love this fabric!!!

So cute! I can't wait to see what it looks like on her wall!!!

Have you been crafty this week? I'd love to hear what projects you've been working on!!!

Snow Globe Soap

This crafty idea came from my 5-year-old. She had watched and episode of Special Agent Oso where he made a snow-globe (in 3 easy steps of course...) and thought it would be fun to make her own. While searching on the computer for ideas we came across this cute project from Alphamom. We headed to Michaels to pick up all our supplies and spent a fun Sunday afternoon making soap.

You will need:
*glycerin soap
*soap dye
*soap glitter
*soap scent (Lo picked "orange")
*ice cube trays
*small buttons or figures to put in the soap
*white bar soap for the "snow"

We had a hard time finding figures small enough for the trays so we picked out buttons instead (can you tell which ones I picked out and which are Lo's choices?).

So excited to start!

Our white soap was really dry and did not grate well...it was more of a powder...this caused problems later on...

We bought a large package of glycerin soap. It made about 20 cubes of soap.

Like Alphamom, we melted our glycerin in the microwave. Next time I will use a double boiler on the stove. I spent A LOT of time reheating the soap b/c it was getting too hard to pour. If you don't have a double boiler I would recommend doing your soap in small batches. We ended up making 4 cubes at a time and that seemed the best number to manage.

Follow the directions on the soap for melting.

Once it is all melted add your color, glitter and scent.

Pour (I used a measuring spoon) melted soap into the ice cube tray leaving about 1/4 of an inch at the top.

Let the soap set a little and then GENTLY push your figures into the tray. You can use a toothpick or pin to help you get them into place.

**Remember that the top of the ice cube tray will be the bottom of the soap so they need to go in UPSIDE DOWN.

At this point Alphamom put in her shaved white soap...we had a dusty disaster. We tried the dust but in the end it added an extra step. Our soap bottoms eventually fell off and we had to melt more soap and fix the bottoms.

Instead I recommend one of the following:
1. Totally omitting the "snow" at the bottom and just fill up the tray completely (you really don't see much of the "snow" anyway
2. Melt opaque white soap

If you really want to use the shaved white bar soap just use a little bit. You need to leave enough room for the glycerin soap to adhere to the top of the snow globe. After you put your shavings on put more glycerin soap to seal the bottom.

Put the trays into the freezer for 20 minutes and then pop them out like they were ice cubes. You can use a small knife to even out the bottoms but we just left them.

**You can see how our "snow" didn't come out so pretty...next time we'll just skip that step

NoJo's baby:

Lo's bird:

The girls each picked out two to give to their friends. We bagged them up and then put a custom label with their company name on each.

Overall we all thought this was a great project. The girls used their new soap tonight and it was a huge hit!

We've already thought of other variations. Lo thought to make pink and red soap with hearts inside for Valentine's day.

The clean up wasn't too bad either...the mess is all soap so it's easy to clean!

Easiest Dessert EVER!!!

I've been on a cooking kick lately. My youngest has been home sick most of the week so there has been little time to lock myself up in my crafty room so I've been in the kitchen making meals for the week.

I heart cooking!

I don't heart baking!

Cooking is more my style...you dump stuff in and you can adjust it to your own tastes. Baking requires exact measurements and patience. This is why I rarely cook desserts...most of them require baking.

A co-worker told me about this super simple and de-lish recipe that only requires 3 ingredients!!!

*Yellow Cake Mix
*Frozen Berries (I used blueberries and black raspberries and I frozen this summer)
*A can of Sprite (you can use Diet Sprite too)

All you need to do is put the berries on the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish, sprinkle the powered cake mix over the berries and pour the sprite on top of the cake mix. DON'T MIX!

Cover with foil and bake @350 for 20 minutes. Remove foil, continue baking 40-60 minutes until "set". Let cool.

Apparently it is a Weight Watchers recipe, but it is so good and SUPER EASY!!!

My Newest Favorite Thing

LOVE THIS LOTION!

A nurse at my work found this at Walgreen's a few months back and brought it to work and it was an instant hit! As nurses we wash our hands about a million times a day and use Purell about 2 million times so our hands get dry and gross really quick!

Just like the Carmex chapstick it is amazing. It really does help your skin heal and doesn't leave it greasy or slimy. It's only available in Walgreens stores or on-line at drugstore.com.

Seriously, it'll change your life...or at least make your skin soft and pretty!

Autumn Mac and Cheese

I love pasta!

I love cheese!

I love cream sauce!

I love wine!
(...there's no wine in this recipe but I felt the need to share)

When you add it all up it's no surprise that Mac n' Cheese is one of my favorite dishes. I've made a few different versions and lately I've been on a kick of adding pureed squash to the sauce. SO YUMMY! This recipe was found on Tasty Kitchen.

It caught my eye for a few reasons:
1. I love that the squash isn't "hidden"
2. It has Brussels sprouts

A word on B. Sprouts...They've gotten a bad reputation. I'll admit until recently I was leading the "B. Sprouts are gross" campaign but I have completely changed my tune. They are so de-lish AND both my girls love them! They are really high in Vitamin C, high in protein for a veggie and have Vitamin D and folic acid...great for those expecting Mamas! What's my point??? DON'T OMIT THE SPROUTS!!!

Here's what you need:

* ½ whole Small Butternut Squash, Peeled And Chopped Into Cubes
* 1 whole Large Apple, Peeled And Chopped
* 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil, Divided
* ¼ teaspoons Nutmeg
* ½ whole Sweet Onion, Chopped
* 2 cups Brussels Sprouts, Chopped
* 1 pound Whole Wheat Pasta
* 1 Tablespoon Butter
* 1 Tablespoon Flour
* 2 cups Milk (I Used skim, Was What I Had On Hand)
* 8 ounces, weight Cheese, Grated (I Used Sharp Cheddar)
* ½ cups Parmesan Cheese, Plus More For Topping
* ¼ cups Panko Bread Crumbs (I didn't have Panko so I used regular old crumbs)

**Are you wondering why my cheese says "don't eat" on it??? It's so my hubby won't eat it before I make the pasta. It helps one avoid last minute trips to the market for missing ingredients!

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Lay chopped squash and apples on a baking sheet and drizzle with 1 tablespoon olive oil, salt and pepper and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg. Roast for 25 minutes, flipping once.

While the squash is roasting, heat a skillet over medium heat and add the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil. Add onions and Brussels sprouts with a pinch of salt and pan roast for 6-8 minutes, turning frequently. Heat a large pot of water to a boil, and begin to cook your pasta.

Set aside squash/apples and sprouts/onion mixture. If pasta is cooked, set it aside as well. Reduce oven heat to 350F.

In a medium saucepan, heat the butter on medium heat and whisk in the flour to create a roux. Add the milk while continuing to whisk, and begin adding the cheeses as well. I find that adding cheese in batches about 3 minutes apart works best. Continue to whisk together so the cheese melts and doesn’t stick to the bottom. The entire process takes about 10 minutes and you want the heat on medium-low; this will help thicken the cheese sauce. I find you don’t want it too thick, as it will thicken in the over.
***It's really important no to rush this process or your sauce will be too runny

Spray a large casserole dish with non-stick spray. Begin to layer pasta, vegetables and apples, and cheese sauce in batches, just mixing to make sure all is combined. Top with Panko and another sprinkling of Parmesan. Bake for 25-30 minutes.

**I didn't layer the dish like they said. I put everything in a large bowl and gently mixed it up. You just need to be careful not to squash the squash!

The best part about this dish is that it's not too overly gooey or cheesy. You really taste all the flavors. DE-LISH!

It makes a very large batch. I don't think it would make a good freezer meal so next time I will split it up and take half to a neighbor.

Snow Day

10 years ago my husband and I packed up our tiny studio apartment and left San Diego to move to the East Coast. There are many days that I miss sunny California life, but yesterday was not one of them.
